Our History
The Newdigate Sisters saved money from the sale of the Silver Spotted Ghost Moth [Leto Venus] to museums in England. With this money they built a school-chapel on the site of the present stone church ‘St. Michael’s and All Angels’ next to the Kurland township which was built in 1905.
1861 Church site acquired at Kirbywood
1863 William & Caroline Newdigate built the grand house Forest Hall. Bishop Gray & his wife Sophie spend a few nights with them and celebrate Holy Communion with 40 people in the large dining room. Discussions are held on erecting a third chapel at The Crags
1867 Temporary Church erected at Kirbywood on land given by the Newdigates.
1881 Consecration of brick and iron Chapel
1892 Church land transferred from Estate of Bishop Gray to Trustees of the Diocese of Cape Town
1894 Caroline Newdigate & her family approve commencement of building the stone church at Kirbywood
1905 Debt on church is cleared
1905 Consecration of St Michael’s, Kirbywood
1909 Vicar General visits Kirbywood for Confirmation service
1909 Pedestal for font donated by Mr Spooner Carved antique chair donated by Mrs Dreyer
1910 The Holy Table is donated
1912 Bishop Sidwell’s first visit to Kirbywood & Forest Hall
1912 George Derbyshire of The Crags is elected as the Synod Representative
1913 Teacher appointed for Kirby School People give the Vicar a horse.
1922 Altar Rails are installed
1923 Brass plaque erected in the names of William & Caroline Newdigate. The hall is built.
2008 A storeroom is added onto the Hall
Visitors Welcome!
If you and your family are in town for the holidays please don’t hesitate to join us for Sunday Communion or our special Easter and Christmas services! Our doors are always open. Come early and plan to stay after the service for tea and refreshments in the Church Hall.
Wedding Ceremonies
Our Beautiful Church is the perfect venue for the “Idyllic Wedding Ceremony”. Combine a ceremony at St Michael’s with a reception at one of the area’s many wonderful Wedding Venues. Contact us for available dates and counseling requirements.
Baptisms
The Anglican church believes baptism is the gift of our Lord Jesus Christ. When he had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
